Kiwi Birds
Some of my favourite subjects to paint are New Zealand’s birds and insects. I love spending time in nature and wildlife sanctuaries, and my work is shaped by a strong commitment to conservation.
The photos below are from Pūkaha kiwi hatchery, which is part of Operation Nest Egg. I'm a volunteer at Pūkaha and get to do lots of work including helping the senior ranger with the kiwi chicks. My paintings are inspired by my experiences at Pūkaha and from the reference photographs I've taken.
This collection of paintings celebrates the kiwi birds and invites viewers to slow down and notice the quiet stories unfolding in the natural world.
Conservation sits at the heart of my practice, and I donate a portion from my sales to eco-sanctuaries including Pūkaha and Zealandia. I also volunteer with the Petone Beach Clean-up Crew.
My process
I work primarily in oil paint, carefully layering each piece to build tone and depth. Each artwork contains between six and twelve layers of paint.
Smaller works may take up to a week to complete, including reference photography, conceptual sketches, canvas preparation, and drawing. Larger works can take between 80 and 320 hours, depending on their size and complexity.
Giclée Prints
Limited and open edition giclée prints are available from my original paintings. These are professionally printed on fine art paper using archival inks and materials to ensure excellent lightfastness and longevity.
