Narrative: This kiwi bird is named Jack who was born in early 2025.
In this artwork, a young kiwi chick pauses to study a walking stick (Acanthoxyla). The chick’s curious gaze meets the quiet stillness of the insect, creating a gentle moment of discovery between two creatures that share the same forest.
In Māori tradition, insects are respected, and it is said that if a stick insect lands on you, you’re entering a sacred place.
This quiet encounter reflects a sense of connection, reminding us that even the smallest creatures have their place and purpose.
My painting is based on drawings I created from reference photographs of real kiwi chicks. As a volunteer at Pūkaha Wildlife Sanctuary, I have the privilege of helping to support conservation efforts and connecting with the beautiful birds that live there.
