Echoes of Love portrays a kiwi chick resting in the early morning light, looking curiously at a Izatha psychra moth.
These native moths, once thought to be extinct, are rarely seen. They are very small and depend on rare old growth shrubland to survive.
In many ways, the moth and the kiwi share a quiet story. Both are part of Aotearoa’s fragile natural world, where survival is never guaranteed.
Kiwi populations are still declining nationally by around two percent each year, reminding us how easily even our most iconic species can fade without care and protection. The moth and the chick meet here in a moment of stillness — two small lives that echo the importance of protecting what remains.
My painting is inspired by the photographs I’ve taken at Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre. As a volunteer there, it is a privilege to witness these moments and support the conservation work helping kiwi populations recover.
Photographs are an indication of what the artworks could look like. Other items in the photograph are not included. Thank you for supporting a living artist!
