Narrative: This little kiwi chick is named “Nova” and is a real kiwi bird being raised at Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre.
 
While kiwis are known to search the forest for insects and worms, they also take advantage of seasonal foods. The hīnau has long played an important role in New Zealand's forests, providing nourishment for both wildlife and people.
 
This painting celebrates the relationship between our native species and the ecosystems that sustain them. Every fallen fruit is a reminder that healthy forests provide countless gifts, often in the smallest and most unexpected ways.💚
 
My painting is based on drawings I created from reference photographs of real kiwi chicks. I love helping out  at Pūkaha Wildlife Sanctuary, where I have the privilege of helping the senior ranger care for the birds.
 
They are a small reminder of the charm, curiosity, and resilience of Aotearoa’s wildlife, and of the important work being done to protect it.
 
My work is intended as a celebration of the efforts to protect the kiwi, while also bringing small moments of joy that can be enjoyed every day. The paintings are designed to make you smile and to become treasured heirloom pieces over time.
