Measurements: 200 x 200mm
Wooden round: Sustainable FSC Certified Birch wood, gessoed and sanded twice.
Paint: Winsor & Newton Professional oil paint, AA rated.
Kiwi bird name: Mapuna
This painting portrays Mapuna as a newly hatched kiwi chick. He was born with a rare genetic condition that gave him white feathers, even though both of his parents are brown.
Mapuna has grown into a devoted father. In the kiwi world, it is the males who incubate the eggs, patiently keeping them warm until the chicks are ready to hatch. Mapuna has helped bring many chicks into the world, which shows the care and dedication that exists in nature.
This painting is inspired by the photographs I’ve taken at Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre, and it’s a privilege to support their conservation efforts.
