Perched on a small stack of books, is a kiwi chick named Chilli (kiwi bird number MB127). Sitting on a book titled Kiwis Can Fly, he pauses to take in the world around him. The title sits in contrast to the reality of the bird itself being flightless. Around him, two tiger moths drift through the light, drawn to its glow. In the stillness of the moment, the chick seems curious, watchful, and quietly confident.
Kiwis do not need to fly to be remarkable.
They are resilient birds that have adapted to life on the forest floor. This painting reflects that spirit: the small but meaningful moment when light reaches the dark, when curiosity leads the way, and when courage appears in quiet, steady ways.
These rounds make wonderful heirloom pieces and fit the cutest of spaces.
Each painting is created from the photographs I’ve taken of real kiwi chicks and are designed to make you smile. They’re a little reminder of the charm, curiosity, and resilience of Aotearoa’s wildlife, thanks to the wildlife sanctuaries such as Pukaha in the Wairarapa. These paintings are a celebration of the work that is done to protect the kiwi, and bring small moments of joy that you can enjoy every day.
