Kiwi bird names: Pepper (left) and Mali (right)
 
Pepper and Mali were born in January 2025 at Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre. Mali has a white face, as his father is completely white due to a rare genetic condition that causes his feathers to be white, even though his parents were brown kiwi. These birds are raised as part of Operation Nest Egg, a nationwide breeding programme helping vulnerable kiwi populations grow.
 
As a volunteer at Pūkaha, I have the privilege of helping the senior ranger care for kiwi chicks. 
From the photographs I take, I sketch my ideas before starting the painting process.
 
The frames are 5cm deep and can either be hung on a wall or sit on a shelf. They are designed to make you smile and, over time, become treasured heirloom pieces.💚
