This kiwi bird is named Bali who was born in 2025. This painting captures a photo I took of Bali in his first week. Only rangers are allowed to be present when kiwi birds are hatching, so I placed the egg in my painting to honour his birth, and it is a tribute to the incredible work being done to protect our kiwi birds.
Painting narrative: Small Wonder portrays a newborn kiwi chick, its eyes barely open as it adjusts to light. In these first quiet moments of life, the chick is fragile, a tiny but remarkable beginning for one of New Zealand’s most treasured birds.
Resting gently on top of the empty shell is a Southern Blue butterfly. Its delicate presence adds a sense of stillness and wonder, where it pauses to witness this extraordinary arrival.
The print measures 21 cm square (8.26 inches) and is unframed.

200gsm Matte paper
Printed on 100% cotton with a smooth texture that allows for a beautiful traditional watercolour look and feel, whilst still reproducing pin-sharp details and colour consistency. The paper has the purest white tone available on the market, without any Optical Brightening Agents (OBAs). Optical Brightening Agents are artificial brighteners that deteriorate over time.
