Kiwi bird name: Manukura

Manukura hatched on 1 May 2011 at Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre. She was the first white kiwi hatched in captivity anywhere in the world. She had a rare genetic condition that meant her feathers were white, even though both of her parents were brown.

Her brother, Mapuna, also has white feathers. He and his partner, Manawa, have hatched several kiwi—some brown and others with white patches on their feathers, such as Mali.

As a volunteer at Pūkaha, I have the privilege of helping the senior ranger care for the kiwi chicks. From the photographs I’ve taken, I sketch my ideas before starting the painting process.

The frames are 5cm deep and can either be hung on a wall or sit on a shelf. They are designed to make you smile and, over time, become treasured heirloom pieces.
