Narrative:
The kōtukuwhite heron are very rare in New Zealand with the only known nesting site on the West Coast of the South Island within the Waitangiroto Nature Reserve.   My painting questions how protected the white heron really are in within the reserve.  
 
At a first glance the painting appears to be a peaceful scene of a heron nurturing its young, however the darker background and perfectly shaped, slightly surreal leaves strike a discord.  The shaft of light symbolises hope for the future of these birds, and the gold heart necklace is a personal touch – a visual metaphor of my deep affection for these birds.
