Kiwi bird names: Mapuna (left) and Manawa (right)
Mapuna (white kiwi) is the brother of Manukura, born at Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre. His partner, Manawa, is snuggled up beside him.
Mapuna has a rare genetic condition that means his feathers are white, even though both of his parents were brown. He is a gorgeous, placid kiwi and a devoted father who has raised several clutches of eggs. In the kiwi world, it is the males who incubate the eggs, while the mum goes off to do her own thing.
As a volunteer at Pūkaha, I have the privilege of helping the senior ranger care for kiwi chicks. From the photographs I’ve taken, I sketch out my ideas before starting the painting process.
You will notice two Izatha psychra moths flittering in the light. These moths are endemic to New Zealand, and are classified as Nationally endangered.
The frames are 5cm deep and can either be hung on a wall or sit on a shelf. They are designed to make you smile and, over time, become treasured heirloom pieces.
