Narrative: I spent some unforgettable moments with several juvenile kiwi at Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre earlier this year, and it truly opened my heart.
These little guys face so many challenges in the wild, but places like Pūkaha give them the best chance to grow strong and safe before they’re released into the wild. This painting is my tribute to those brave newborn kiwis and the incredible work being done to protect them.
Kiwis love eating worms and berries, so you will find in the painting a velvet worm, which are called ‘living fossils’ as they are remarkably unchanged from 500 million years ago. They look a bit like caterpillars and have pairs of stumpy legs along the length of their body. These worms are nocturnal predators that spit a sticky slime to trap their prey.
Karamū berries are small, edible orange-to-red fruits produced by native karamū bushes (Coprosma robusta) which are native to New Zealand. They are described as having a subtle or slightly sour taste when fully ripe and are full of Vitamin C.
