This painting features the playful pīwakawaka, which is nestled amongst the vibrant blooms of the endangered kākābeak bush.
It celebrates the relationship between two treasured native species. As the pīwakawaka searches for the tiny insects that are drawn to the nectar-rich flowers, it reminds us of the delicate connections that exist throughout nature, and of the importance of protecting the native plants and wildlife that depend upon one another. Look closer and you'll see the kōwhai caterpillars, spider, and little sandflies dancing around the blooms.
Each painting has been built up slowly, with as many as six layers of paint to achieve the colour, light, and intricate detail that brings the scene to life.
A big thank you to Lucy Broad photographer for allowing me to paint her photograph of the pīwakawaka. The kākābeak bush is painted by the bushes I have in my garden.
Measures: 30 cm in diameter (11.8 inches).
Materials: Winsor & Newton Professional Oil Paint on sustainably sourced Birch wood.
