Narrative:
The Kāruhiruhi is a striking native bird often seen gathered in harbours and along sheltered coastlines. They build their nests high in pine trees overhanging estuaries and cliffs, weaving together sticks, seaweed – and sometimes even shells or plastic. Sadly, these beautiful birds are classed as nationally vulnerable. With storms growing stronger, calm days are a blessing – and it was on one of those days that I felt inspired to paint “A Good Day for Fishing.”
In the nest you’ll find estuary treasures: the chiton, Banksii seaweed, mud crab, green-shelled mussel, glossy violet snails, and the NZ screw-shell.
For me, this piece is a gentle reminder of how precious our wildlife is, and how important it is to slow down, notice, and protect the beauty around us.
As many as ten layers of paint has been applied to this painting to achieve the colour and tone displayed in the work.
