"First Light" is inspired by the little Kiwi chick at the Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre. Permission from Tara Swan was given to modify her photograph for this artwork.  I have painted the chick with the first touch of moonlight on its face.  As an endangered bird, the light on the chick’s face is a way for me to express my hope for its species. Nature is resilient, and despite the devastating impacts on this species over the last century, it has survived with the help of conservationists.  My hope is that my artwork encourages people to participate in urgent conservation work and to consider ways to reduce their own impact on our planet.
